What the emoji means
is Face with Bags Under Eyes: a yellow face with drooping, half-open eyes and pronounced dark bags beneath them. Unicode's keywords are bags, bored, exhausted, eyes, face, fatigued and tired.
It became popular fast, and the reason is that nothing else covered this exactly. 😴 is asleep. 🥱 is yawning. 😪 is sleepy. None of them capture chronically tired - the state of having not slept properly for a while and it starting to show.
How people use
- Ongoing exhaustion. Parents of small children, shift workers, students in exam season, anyone in a bad stretch at work.
- Burnout. Not one bad night but an accumulation, which is exactly the distinction the emoji draws.
- Deadpan boredom. Unicode lists bored as a keyword, and it does get used for unimpressed as well as tired.
- "This again." Reacting to a recurring annoyance.
compared with the other tired faces
- Bags under eyes - chronic tiredness, visible on your face.
- 😪 Sleepy Face - drowsy right now, with the sleep bubble.
- 🥱 Yawning Face - the physical yawn, and also boredom.
- 😴 Sleeping Face - actually asleep.
- 😩 Weary Face - fed up rather than tired, and frequently used flirtatiously, which surprises people.
