What the emoji means
is the Fingerprint: the ridge pattern of a fingertip, usually drawn as concentric loops. Unicode's keywords are clue, crime, detective, fingerprint, forensics and identity, which is a good map of its two distinct meanings - evidence and identification.
Fingerprints have been used for identification since the late nineteenth century, and the fact that no two are alike - including between identical twins - is what makes them such a strong metaphor for individuality.
How people use
- Biometric security. Unlocking a phone, authentication, password managers. Probably the most common everyday use.
- True crime and detective content. A huge genre with an obvious need for this symbol.
- Identity and individuality. "One of a kind" - the metaphor writes itself.
- Privacy and surveillance. Data collection, tracking, digital footprints.
