What the 🇨🇶 emoji means
🇨🇶 is the flag of Sark: the red-and-white Cross of St George with a canton in the upper hoist carrying two gold lions, the arms of Normandy.
Sark is one of the Channel Islands, part of the Bailiwick of Guernsey, sitting in the English Channel off the coast of France. It has a population of around five hundred.
Why Sark got an emoji in 2024
Flag emoji are not chosen by Unicode. They are pairs of regional indicator letters that correspond to ISO 3166-1 country codes, and a flag becomes possible the moment a code is assigned.
Sark was given the code CQ in 2023. That is the entire reason the flag appeared in Emoji 16.0 - not a decision about Sark's importance, but an automatic consequence of the standard. It is the first new flag emoji in several years.
What Sark is known for
- No cars. Motor vehicles are banned. Transport is by bicycle, horse-drawn carriage, or tractor.
- The first Dark Sky Island. Designated in 2011 - it has no public street lighting, which makes it one of the best places in the world to see the night sky.
- Feudal until 2008. Sark was Europe's last feudal jurisdiction, holding its first fully democratic elections only in 2008.
- Tiny. About 5.5 square kilometres, with roughly five hundred residents.
