What the emoji means
is the Leafless Tree: a trunk with bare branches and no foliage. Unicode's keywords are bare, barren, branches, dead, drought and leafless.
The existing tree emoji were all green - 🌳 deciduous, 🌲 evergreen, 🌴 palm - which left no way to show a tree in winter, in drought, or dead. Given how much of the world has a season where every tree looks like this, the gap was conspicuous.
How people use
- Winter. The most straightforward use, and seasonally very heavy.
- Drought and climate. Wildfire aftermath, deforestation, water shortage - a serious register the green trees could not carry.
- Halloween and gothic aesthetics. Bare branches are a staple of the visual language.
- Family trees and genealogy. The branching structure, without leaves getting in the way.
- Dormancy. Figuratively - a project on hold, a quiet period.
