What the 🔍 emoji means
🔍 is the Magnifying Glass Tilted Left - a lens with the handle pointing down and to the left. It is the universal search icon, and that is what carries almost all of its meaning.
There is a mirrored twin, 🔎 Magnifying Glass Tilted Right, which is the same object facing the other way. On most platforms 🔍 is shown with a plain lens and 🔎 with a slightly darker or tinted one, but they mean the same thing.
How people use 🔍
Beyond marking a literal search box, it does several jobs in ordinary writing:
- "I looked into this." Prefacing a fact-check, a receipt, or a bit of research with 🔍 signals that what follows is the result of digging.
- "Look closer." Pointing at a detail in an image that is easy to miss.
- "Searching for..." In job posts and classifieds, 🔍 introduces what someone is looking for.
- Investigation and true crime. Widely used as a topic marker in that genre alongside 🕵️ and 🧩.
🔍 versus 🔎 and other lenses
The two magnifying glasses are functionally interchangeable, but a few conventions have emerged:
- 🔍 tilted left is the default and matches the search icon in most interfaces.
- 🔎 tilted right is often used for "examining" rather than "searching".
- 🔬 Microscope is for scientific detail, not searching.
- 🕵️ Detective carries the person doing the looking rather than the act.
