What the emoji means
is the Orca: the black-and-white marine mammal also called the killer whale, shown in profile with its characteristic white eye patch and tall dorsal fin.
Despite the name, an orca is not a whale in the everyday sense - it is the largest member of the dolphin family. The "killer whale" name is generally thought to be an inversion of the older Spanish asesina de ballenas, "whale killer", describing what they hunt rather than what they are.
How people use
- Marine biology and conservation. Pod tracking, whale watching, campaigns against captivity.
- Anti-captivity advocacy. A significant strand of orca content online, and one reason the emoji was requested for years.
- Boat interactions. Orcas off the Iberian coast damaging boat rudders became a running internet story, and the emoji arrived into that context.
- Pacific Northwest identity. Orcas are emblematic of the region and appear widely in its art and iconography.
