What the emoji means
is Distorted Face: a yellow face stretched, smeared or rippling out of shape, with the eyes and mouth pulled along with it. Unlike almost every other face emoji, it does not depict an expression - it depicts a sensation. The distortion is the point.
Unicode's own keywords for it are anxiety, bloated, panic, shocked, surprised and vulnerable, which covers the range well. It is the visual language of dissociation and overwhelm: the moment where your face stops being able to hold a normal shape.
How people are starting to use
This emoji was only approved in September 2025 and reached most phones during 2026, so its meaning is still forming. The uses appearing so far:
- Overwhelm. Too many things at once, brain melting.
- Anxiety and dread. The stomach-drop feeling, without the drama of 😱.
- Glitch humour. It reads as a corrupted image, which suits the deep-fried, distorted-meme aesthetic it arrived into.
- Physical unwellness. Bloated, hungover, sensory overload.
If you are trying to place it: 🫠 melting face is defeated and resigned; is closer to unravelling in real time.
compared with similar faces

- 😵💫 Face with Spiral Eyes - dizzy, hypnotised, disoriented.
- 🤯 Exploding Head - mind blown, usually by something impressive.
- 😰 Anxious Face with Sweat - straightforward worry.

Why might not show on your phone
Emoji 17.0 was approved by the Unicode Consortium in September 2025, but Unicode only defines the character. Apple, Google, Samsung and the rest each draw it and ship it in their own operating system updates, which normally land the following year.
If you see an empty box instead of a face, your device has not been updated yet. The person you sent it to may see it perfectly.
