What the 🥹 emoji means
🥹 is Face Holding Back Tears: wide eyes brimming with tears, eyebrows pushed up, mouth pressed into a tight line. The whole design is someone fighting to keep composure.
Crucially, it is not a crying emoji. 🥹 is the moment before crying, and the effort of holding it in is the entire point. It was added in 2021 and became popular almost immediately, because nothing else in the emoji set covered "I am welling up and trying to hold it together".
How people actually use 🥹
Despite the tears, the emotion is usually positive:
- Touched. Replying to a kind message, a surprise, a reunion video. "This is so sweet 🥹".
- Proud. Watching someone succeed - a friend's graduation, a sibling's first job.
- Pleading. Asking for something with the emoji doing the puppy-eyes work: "can we get food 🥹".
- Genuinely upset. The minority use, and usually clear from context.

What 🥹 means from a girl or from a guy
This is one of the most searched questions about 🥹, and the honest answer is that the sender's gender changes very little. It is a warmth emoji. Someone sending it is telling you that what you said landed - that it was sweet, or moving, or that they are asking you for something and softening the ask.
In a flirty context it usually means the message genuinely affected them, and it reads as sincere rather than performative. If you are trying to work out whether someone likes you, 🥹 is a warmer signal than 😊 and a much warmer one than 🙂.
