What the ⚙️ emoji means
⚙️ is the Gear: a single toothed cog, usually grey. Its dominant meaning comes from software rather than machinery - the cog is the universal settings icon, used across essentially every operating system and app.
The character itself predates that convention; it was in Unicode as a technical symbol before it became an emoji in 2015.
How people use ⚙️
- Settings and configuration. By far the most common use, including in menus and documentation.
- Engineering and machinery. Manufacturing, mechanics, industrial content.
- Work in progress. Something being built or maintained - often paired with 🚧 or 🔧.
- Systems and process. "How the machine actually works" as a metaphor, in business and politics writing.
- Steampunk aesthetics. Where cogs are the whole visual language.

Why ⚙️ sometimes renders in black and white
Like 🌧️, ⚙️ needs an invisible variation selector to display as a colour emoji. Without it, many systems draw a plain black cog instead. Both forms are correct - one is the text presentation and one is the emoji presentation - which is why the same character can look quite different depending on where you paste it.
