What the 🪼 emoji means
🪼 is the Jellyfish: a translucent bell with tentacles trailing beneath, usually shown in pale blue, pink or purple. It was approved in Emoji 15.0 in September 2022 and reached most phones during 2023, filling one of the last obvious gaps in the marine set.
Jellyfish are among the oldest multicellular animals on Earth, predating dinosaurs by hundreds of millions of years, and they have no brain, heart or bones. That combination - ancient, simple, and quietly dangerous - is part of why they carry so much metaphorical weight.
How people use 🪼
Three strands dominate:
- Literal. Aquarium visits, beach warnings, diving and marine biology content.
- Drifting. Jellyfish do not swim so much as pulse and float, which makes them a natural metaphor for going with the current, feeling aimless, or letting things happen.
- Beautiful but stings. A compact way of describing something - or someone - that is lovely to look at and best not touched.
It is also popular purely aesthetically, particularly in soft, pastel and ocean-themed profiles.
