What the emoji means
is Hairy Creature: a tall, shaggy, ape-like figure standing upright, usually mid-stride. Its Unicode keywords are bigfoot, cryptid, forest, giant, hairy and sasquatch, so there is no ambiguity about what it depicts - only about what it is called.
The generic name is deliberate. Bigfoot and Sasquatch are North American, the Yeti is Himalayan, the Yowie is Australian, the Almas is Central Asian. A neutral name lets one character serve all of them, which is the same reasoning behind naming other emoji by description rather than by a single culture's term.
How people use
- Cryptid and folklore content. The obvious one - Bigfoot sightings, monster-hunting, forest mystery.
- "Rarely seen." Describing a friend who never comes out, or a colleague who is never in the office. Bigfoot as a byword for something people claim exists but nobody can photograph clearly.
- Body hair jokes. Predictable, and already common.
- Blurry photos. The Patterson-Gimlin film is so culturally embedded that works as a comment on any badly focused picture.
